So, like with most things, I’m late to the party. But I was finally able to give Zombies, Run! a try, since the weather was so gorgeous today.
Verdict: it’s really fun and gave me an amazing workout - and I barely noticed how much time had passed because the story is well-written and the acting is wonderful. The communications major sounds and speaks really similar to Wheatley from Portal 2, so I instantly liked that bit of dark humor.
Being chased by the zombie hoards is freaking terrifying, there’s this beeping that speeds up if the zombies start closing in, then you hear the sounds. During the second sprint I was dying (apparently my legs weren’t too happy about being forced to run so soon after a half-marathon), but as soon as I heard the growling it motivated me to put on some extra speed to escape. Though I did get a ton of weird looks, since I went running up and down Lakeshore Drive and during the zombie chases I was literally screaming “OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT!”
I’d recommend making a playlist of intense movie soundtracks to run to, though. I just had my regular running mix loaded, and hearing Glee mash-ups detracted from the atmosphere. But during the final leg of the mission, “Skorponok” from Transformers came on and it felt like I was in a video game or a movie. So stick to music that fits the zombie theme as opposed to, like, K-Pop.
Definitely worth the $7.99, though! I can’t wait to do the next mission. I know it probably sounds silly, but I felt like I was part of the story. No spoilers, but I seriously care about Sam and his history to the point where I was tearing up while running, and not because I was in pain.
tl;dr: Gives you both a workout, and feels!
